Angola, the third largest country in Africa, should be flourishing. With diamond and oil resources worth over $2 billion per year, Angola has the opportunity for economic and political stability comparable to that of Botswana and Namibia. But Angola is devastated after nearly 40 years of civil war. Despite its natural resources, over 90% of Angolans live in poverty, two-thirds of them on less than a dollar a day. <http://www.professionaljeweler.com/archives/hottopics/angola.html>.
The places have the resources they need they are just choosing not to use them as a positive, instead it is causing war and poverty.
Blood diamonds are in relation to diamond trading, conflict diamond (also called a converted diamond, blood diamond, hot diamond, or war diamond) refers to a diamond mined in a war zone and sold to finance an insurgency, invading army's war efforts, or a warlord's activity, usually in Africa[1] where around two-thirds of the world's diamonds are extracted
Reasonings behind why I chose this topic...
Blood Diamonds stood out to me because at the end of the day a diamond is just a stone. In Africa and places where they find diamonds a diamond could pay and provide for your family because the diamond is in such a high demand. Most of the diamonds however are not legally shipped to the U.S. but they are getting used and being put in a wedding ring, something that a women charishes and means everything to her- a sign of love. This topic is making me think twice on what diamonds really mean and what people go through just because of a stone.
